WILLIAM A. “BILL” OWEN age 77, beloved husband of Cheryl (nee Merhar); loving father of Amanda LaPorte, DVM (husband Jason); cherished son of Albert and Helen (nee Unco) Owen; dear friend to many.
Born on July 20, 1945, in Cleveland, Bill spent his formative years in Cleveland Heights, graduating from Cleveland Heights High School. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Cleveland State University. This sparked the beginning of an illustrious career as a civil engineer for an international company, affording him the opportunity to travel extensively from many bustling European cities to the rugged beauty of Scotland.
Despite his career achievements and travels, Bill was a man deeply rooted in his community. Following his retirement he served the Willoughby Hills Lions Club with distinction, undertaking the roles of president and treasurer. He was an avid reader and a devoted member of the Charles Dickens Book Club. Bill’s creative side shone through in his accomplished stained-glass artwork. Bill was a lifelong runner, completing numerous marathons. He leaves behind a multifaceted legacy. His loved ones recall his quiet and faithful nature and his lifelong dedication to learning. Above all, he is remembered for being a genuinely good man, a loyal husband, and a wonderful father. Bill earned his rest on June 6, 2023. He will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends.
Contributions may be made in memory of Bill to the Cleveland Animal Protective League. Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Bill on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, from 10am-12pm at THE DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF WILLOUGHBY HILLS, 28890 CHARDON ROAD (between Bishop Rd. and Rt. 91). A brief Catholic prayer service and eulogy will follow.
