THOMAS G. “TOM” McDONALD, 88, of Chardon, entered into eternal life Friday, December 23, 2016 surrounded by his family at his home.
Tom was born August 15, 1928 in Chardon, OH to the late John and Helen (nee Keoth) McDonald. He graduated from Chardon High School in 1948. Tom was employed with the U.S Post office and eventually became the Postmaster retiring in 1985 after a 40 year career.
Tom was a member of St. Mary Church where he was an usher, worked bingo, was a gym teacher, coach, and boy scout leader. His hobbies included watching the Indians, playing cards, collecting WW II memorabilia, hunting and making maple syrup. Tom was described by his family as very kind and thoughtful man who was a great story teller, quick-witted and was the life of the party. He was loved by all who knew him including the children he coached who remained friends with him.
Tom is survived by his wife Patsy (nee Jonke); children Tim McDonald (Mary), Todd McDonald (Michelle), Bart McDonald (Carol), Anne Godlewski (Tom), Barry McDonald, Mike McDonald (Regina), and Ned McDonald (Chris); step-children Bridgett Martis (Larry), and Sharon Racey (Rick); grandchildren Maria McDonald, Tara Blacker, Meg Godlewski, TJ Godlewski, Nate McDonald, Dana McDonald, Joan McDonald, Katie McDonald, Sara Hull, and Hunter McDonald; step-grandchildren Sydney, Kendall, and Ashton and great-grandchild Mikayla Blacker.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife Joan McDonald (nee Walsh); grandson Patrick McDonald, and siblings Gladys Walker, Ward McDonald, June Prince, LaVerne Rist, and Jack McDonald.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Tom’s memory to Sisters of Notre Dame Retirement Fund 13000 Auburn Rd, Chardon, OH 44024.
Tom’s Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at St. Mary Catholic Church 401 North St, Chardon, OH 44024 at 10 AM. Burial following at All Souls Cemetery. Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Tom at THE DeJOHN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY OF CHARDON (formerly Ritondaro) 126 SOUTH ST. (Rt. 44, south of Rt. 6/Chardon Square) TUESDAY 3-7 PM.
