Generations of Ursuline College students on two campuses learned chemistry from keen-minded Sister Ann Gertrude Hill. Others developed computer skills under her tutelage. Still other individuals were nurtured spiritually through her ministries at area skilled nursing facilities. The soft-spoken and beloved teacher and minister, in residence at Regina Health Center since March 2013, died suddenly August 18 at Saint Vincent Charity Medical Center. She was 93. She had marked 70 years as an Ursuline last year.
Ruth Hill, daughter of William and Gertrude (Kuehner) Hill, was born March 15, 1922, in Cleveland. The Villa Angela Academy graduate joined the Ursuline congregation in 1943 from Holy Cross Parish, Euclid. She professed final vows in 1949.
Sister Ann Gertrude earned a bachelor’s of science degree from Ursuline College, and master’s and doctoral degrees in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame. She was a 50-year member of the American Chemical Society and often hosted the group’s meetings at Ursuline College.
She began her ministry career teaching chemistry and math at Villa Angela Academy. In 1946 she was assigned to teach chemistry at Ursuline College where she served full-time until 1988 and then part-time in computer science until 1998. She took on the added role of pastoral minister/chaplain in 1988, serving through the years at Sunny Acres nursing facility, MetroHealth Center for Skilled Nursing and Woodside Village for Independent and Assisted Living.
In 1993 Sister Ann Gertrude was the recipient of the college’s Marie LoPresti Faculty Award for Community Service for her pastoral outreach at Sunny Acres. In 1999 MetroHealth named Sister Ann Gertrude its Volunteer of the Year, citing her “healing voice, loving touch, and listening ear.”
Upon retiring from active ministry she moved to the community’s Saint Angela Center where she assisted in the ministry of prayer and service, a ministry she continued throughout her time at Regina Health Center.
She will be remembered for her quiet demeanor, her youthful and ever meticulous appearance, and for her dedicated 65-year service career. She was a faith-filled woman, a committed religious, and a loving aunt and cousin.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Ursuline Sisters.
