RUDOLPH F. LUKEZ, born in Ljubljana, Slovenia on August 4, 1928 passed away peacefully on July 7, 2015 at his home in Kirtland, Ohio. Rudy led a remarkable life. As a young man in World War II, he survived the occupation of his homeland. In 1945 he was forced to leave Slovenia when his family home was seized by communists. Despite his refugee status, Rudy eventually attended the universities of Bologna and Padua. He spoke five languages. In 1950 he came to the United States and then completed his pharmacy degree at The Ohio State University.
Rudy began his pharmacy career at The Cleveland Clinic in 1955. During his tenure he was instrumental in developing multiple innovations in IV admixture, including solutions for organ transplant preservation and dialysis. Rudy retired from the Clinic in 1999 having served the institution for 44 years.
In retirement, Rudy stayed current on pharmacy topics (maintaining his license for 50 years), enjoyed travel, reading about history, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his dear wife, Edith (Stransky), whom he married on September 26, 1959. He was the proud father of three wonderful sons: Rudy (Dana Schaefer) of Highland Ranch, Colorado, Andre (Cynthia Lammert) of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and John (Tami) of Morgan Hill, California. Rudy was also the beloved grandfather of Jillian, Theodore, Sierra, and Danica.
