RoseMary Josephine (Semich) Merrick loving wife of Jack Merrick and mother of Dale Merrick, passed away May 6, 2014 at The Slovene Home for the Aged. Born August 26, 1919, in Cleveland, Ohio, she was one of seven children born to Albert and Josephine (Hrobat) Semich. She frequently talked about growing up with her siblings “the stories of hardship” the laughter.
RoseMary married Jack Merrick October 25, 1941 at Nottingham Congregational Church on Nottingham Road in Cleveland. Their only child, Dale Merrick was born in 1948 and passed away in 1998.
She was a stay-at-home Mom for several years, returning to work and eventually retired from the downtown Cleveland Office of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. RoseMary was an excellent cook and loved to bake traditional Slovenian desserts.
Jack and RoseMary travelled the United States during their early retirement years. They enjoyed going to the most famous shopping malls i.e. the largest in the United States, etc. The dined out often at various restaurants in the Cleveland area, sometimes driving as far as Akron for lunch.
RoseMary always had a love for music, especially opera. She and Jack often traveled with senior groups to various theaters, even to Toronto to take in the newest and best musicals.
Teddy bears found a soft spot in RoseMary’s heart many years ago. Her collection was huge…every size imaginable. The bears “lived” in the upstairs of the double home she and Jack shared. These bears were lovingly donated to a charity a few years ago.
RoseMary was predeceased by her husband, Jack; son, Dale; her parents and siblings, Albert, Joseph, John, Ann Tompkins and Peter.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Caroline Longhurst Merrick of Tennessee, her sister, Pauline (William Provo) of Euclid, sister-in-law, Virginia Marinko Pinkava (William) of Mayfield Heights and several nieces and nephews.
Per RoseMary’s request there will be no funeral service. She will be buried alongside her husband and son at All Souls Cemetery in Chardon Twp. Burial service will be private.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Slovene Home for the Aged for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, we would like to suggest a donation to The Slovene Home for the Aged, 18621 Neff Road, Cleveland, Ohio 44119.
