COMMANDER ROBERT W. “BILL” SHIVELY SR., Retired US Navy, age 86, beloved husband for 56 years of Joan (nee Kish); loving father of Marie Highfield (husband Mark), Robert W. Jr., (wife Caroline), Carolyn Sokol (husband Jeffrey), Joseph (wife Catherine), and Jon (wife Teresa); devoted grandfather of 16; cherished son of the late Richard and Josephine (nee Pellicer); dearest brother of Daniel (wife Pamela), Frank (wife Phaedra), Josephine Primbs (husband Charles) and the late Joseph, John, and Richard (wife Maravillas); dear uncle and great-uncle of many. U.S. Navy Veteran serving in the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts.
Bill was born July 10, 1931, and died December 21, 2017. He graduated from Old Washington High School and then from The Ohio State University, where he was on the soccer team. Bill was a Commander and navigator in the United States Navy, and served in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. He also worked as an environmental engineer for the State of Ohio.
Bill was a fan of the Buckeyes and the U.S. Navy Midshipmen football team. He enjoyed traveling, and the music of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. Bill was kind, loving, and patient, with a gentle nature and a good spirit. He was social, patriotic, and a hard worker who was dedicated to his family. He will be dearly missed.
Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, December 28, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 401 North St., Chardon at 10 AM. Burial following with Military Honors at All Souls Cemetery. Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Bill at THE DeJOHN Funeral Home & Crematory of Chardon (formerly Ritondaro) 126 South St. (Rt. 44, south of Rt. 6/Chardon Square) WEDNESDAY 4-7 PM.
