With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Richard P. Pillar, a devoted husband, loving father, adoring grandfather, and cherished companion. Richard left us on March 31, 2025, at the age of 78, after a valiant fight against cancer. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, quiet strength, and unwavering love.
For 50 years, Richard was the beloved husband of Patricia (nee Kekic), the love of his life. Together, they built a home filled with laughter, warmth, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life. He was the proud and devoted father of Brendan (wife Elizabeth Kenney) and Caroline, whose lives were forever shaped by his gentle wisdom and steady support. His greatest joy in recent years was being a grandfather to Maxwell and Margot, following their endeavors and growth and instilling in them the curiosity that defined him. He was a dearest brother of the late Michael (wife Jeanne); treasured brother-in-law of Judy and the late Andrew Moodry; and a dear uncle, great-uncle, and friend of many.
Richard was a man of quiet intelligence, a deep thinker who approached life with both logic and creativity. He never sought the spotlight, but made an impact through his actions—small, steady, and full of heart. His compassion for others was evident in everything he did. Whether volunteering to feed the hungry, donating blood consistently over his lifetime, or building homes for families in need through Habitat for Humanity, Richard lived his values with humility and grace. It was this same care for others that led him to a career in nursing, where he found purpose in helping and healing.
Born on September 12, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio, Richard was a lifelong learner who never lost his curiosity. After graduating from St. Joseph High School in 1964, he continued his education at Kent State and Cleveland State University. He loved discovering new ideas, and whether he was reading, researching, or perfecting his latest woodworking project, he approached every endeavor with patience and skill.
Richard also found joy in the outdoors and loved cycling, watching sunsets on the beach, hiking, or tending to his garden. A dedicated sports fan, he never missed a chance to cheer on Notre Dame, OSU, the Browns, Cavs, or Indians, always remaining hopeful—no matter the score. His love for adventure and discovery took him on many travels, but New England forever held a special place in his heart.
Though we are heartbroken, we find comfort in knowing that Richard lived a life full of purpose, love, and quiet generosity. His presence in our lives was a gift, and his memory will continue to guide us forward. We will forever cherish the lessons he taught us—the importance of kindness, a positive mindset, and a healthy lifestyle.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Richard’s memory to The Holden Arboretum, a place that reflects his love for nature and peaceful reflection (9550 Sperry Road, Kirtland, Ohio, 44094).
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 5:00 PM at THE DeJOHN FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATIONS CENTER OF CHESTERLAND 12811 CHILLICOTHE ROAD (Rt. 306, just south of Mayfield Rd.). Family and friends are invited to gather Saturday from 2:00–5:00 PM to share memories, honor Richard’s life, and find comfort in one another.
Richard’s love, wisdom, and quiet strength will remain with us always.
