Peter C. Lutjen

Peter Christian Lutjen passed away Nov. 22, 2024, aged 82 years. Beloved husband for 59 years to Maryanne (nee Grande), loving father of Maryanne Hiti (husband Anthony), Peter (wife Jennifer) and Susan Lutjen O'Connor (husband Barry), devoted Poppa of Nicholas, Martin and Mariana Hiti, and Luca and Nico Lutjen, cherished son of the late George and Julie (nee Kjems), dear brother of George (deceased) and Christian, loving brother-in-law, uncle and friend to many.

Pete was born in Dayton, Ohio on November 30, 1941. His family moved to Erie, Pennsylvania shortly after, and he loved sharing stories of growing up near Presque Isle. He attended Saint Joseph High School in Cleveland. There, one of the Brothers recognized his artistic talent and encouraged him to attend Cooper School of Art in Cleveland. After art school, Pete enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. In 1965 he married Maryanne, whom he lovingly called Birdie. He later established Lutjen Art Service, a technical illustration business.

Pete was known for his great sense of humor. He brought laughter to yearly vacations with family and friends at Burr Oak State Park and the Outer Banks. His love of automobiles began as a teenager, and throughout his life he owned and took meticulous care of many sports cars. He enjoyed spending time with friends: hanging out with neighbors on Fenwood Road, riding his motorcycle with buddies across the country, trips to Eddie's Grill in Geneva on the Lake, and meeting friends weekly for lunches at Eat at Joes.

Pete was empathetic and accepting of others; friends and family could rely on him. He would have celebrated 40 years of sobriety in January 2025. Some of his dearest friends were those he met in AA.

His greatest joy was his family. He brought wonder to the lives of his children and grandchildren with magical stories and traditions. His playful silliness, along with his kind heart, will be missed by all.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Peter suggested to Alcoholics Anonymous Cleveland Chapter, 1557 St. Clair Ave. NE, Cleveland, OH 44114; or to Gesu Parish, 2490 Miramar Blvd., University Heights, OH 44118. 

Mass of Christian Burial for Peter will be held on his birthday Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024, at Gesu Catholic Church at 11 AM. Private burial at a later date. Family will receive friends to pay tribute and celebrate the life of Peter at THE DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF SOUTH EUCLID, 4600 MAYFIELD RD. (just East of Green Rd.) FRIDAY 4-8 PM.
