MARYELLEN A. MARTIN (nee Popelka) age 82, beloved wife for 60 years of Edward, II; loving mother of Edward, III “Ted” (wife Barbara), Terry (wife Elizabeth), David (wife Patricia) and Teresa “Tammy” Martin Kosier (husband Eric); devoted grandmother of Matthew, Peter, Andrew, Edward, Ryan (wife Claire), Lindsay, Zachary, Oliver, Sophia, Luke, David, Abigail, Madeline and Avery; cherished daughter of the late Clarence and Lillian (nee Jendrus) Popelka; dearest sister of Thomas Popelka (wife Judith), Joseph Popelka (wife Mary), Anne Welsh (husband Chris) and the late Kathleen Zgonc (husband Timothy deceased); dear aunt and great-aunt of many.
MaryEllen grew up in Cleveland. She attended Nativity Elementary school before enrolling in and graduating from Hoban Dominican High School in 1955. She went on to attend St. Alexis School of Nursing. She worked as a critical care nurse for 35 years, a Hospice assessment nurse for several years, eventually retiring as a nurse at Briar Hill Nursing home. She said that the most rewarding part of her career, by far, was working as a Hospice nurse.
MaryEllen lived in New York in the early sixties, moving on to Annapolis Maryland, returning to Cleveland before settling in Derwood Maryland for thirty years. She returned to the Cleveland area, settling in Huntsburg in 2002.
She enjoyed craft fairs, decorating for the holidays, Christmas, snow, shopping on QVC and Notre Dame and Washington Redskins football. She also enjoyed fresh flowers, touchdown Jesus, playing cards and Yahtzee, and building tents with her grandchildren. MaryEllen enjoyed travelling with her family. She especially enjoyed her trips to Ireland and Alaska. Her favorite music genre was Christmas music and the harp.
MaryEllen was jolly, carefree and always enjoyed a good conversation. She was funny and had an infectious laugh. Her smile literally lit up a room. MaryEllen is remembered as selfless and what she enjoyed most was taking care of the people around her.
She will leave a gaping hole in the world. She will be dearly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of MaryEllen to St. Helen Catholic Church. Relatives and friends are requested to meet for the Mass of Christian Burial Monday, December 28, 2020 at 11 AM at St. Helen’s Catholic Church 12060 Kinsman Rd. Newbury Township. Cremation following by DeJohn Crematory. Burial will take place at All Souls Cemetery Tuesday December 29th at 1:00 PM. Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of MaryEllen at THE DeJOHN FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATIONS CENTER OF CHESTERLAND 12811 CHILLICOTHE ROAD (Rt. 306, just south of Mayfield Rd.) SUNDAY 2-4 PM.
