Mary Bartkowicz

MARY C. BARTKOWICZ (nee Calanni), 91, of Shaker Heights, passed away October 9, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife of Frank for 58 years, dearest mother of Norma Weir (husband Chip) and Paula Hart (husband Steven Simon), loving grandmother of Nate Weir, and Genevieve and Margot Simon, cherished daughter of the late Salvatore and Josephine (nee Pirello), devoted sister of Ann Calanni and the late Leonard Calanni, Sr., treasured aunt, great-aunt, cousin, and friend to many. A life-long Clevelander, Mary was a music, art, and culinary enthusiast. Her love for music began at age12 when her father gave her a violin.  Study was interrupted through the years, but her return to the violin came with her joining the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra, of which she was a member for almost four decades, and for which she proudly designed its logo. Mary enjoyed cooking for family and friends. Her recipes will live on through her daughters, grandchildren, and friends. A class in mechanical drawing in high school led Mary to a career in drafting, first with the W.J. Schoenberger Co. during World War II, then to TRW.  She attended Case School of Applied Science and John Carroll University. For many years Mary worked as a freelance calligrapher and artist. Mary was a member of the Western Reserve Calligrapher’s Society, a women’s golf league, and the John Adams High School Alumni group. She was a Cleveland Orchestra season ticket holder for over 50 years. Mary was a charter member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and had served as president of the church’s women’s guild. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, November. 4, 2017 at St. Dominic Catholic Church, 19000 Van Aken Blvd. (at Norwood Rd.), Shaker Heights, at 10 AM. Burial following in Calvary Cemetery. Following the burial, a luncheon to which all are invited will be held at 12:30PM at the Cleveland Museum of Art, 11150 East Boulevard, Cleveland, Ohio to celebrate and honor the life of Mary. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the following would be appreciated: the University Hospitals McDonald Women’s Cancer Fund, Institutional Relations and Development, P.O. Box 94554, Cleveland, OH 44101-4554; the Cleveland Women’s Orchestra Mary Calanni Bartkowicz Memorial Fund, 2691 Country Club Blvd., Rocky River, OH 44116; or the Hospice of the Western Reserve, 17876 St. Clair Ave., Cleveland, OH 44110.
