Last July Margrit Reid was riding the six-foot waves in her favorite vacation spot, Martha’s Vineyard, with her much-loved husband of 15 years, James (Jimmy) Roddy. There were no signs she would be gone four months later—lost to glioblastoma, a brain cancer.
Margrit was a free spirit, an original, with a feisty nature and a compassionate heart. She was full of life and, with her Jimmy, lived her life fully, making the most of every day. She was devoted to her son, Dr. Cody Johnson, always encouraging him, embracing his wife Megan as the daughter she never had and finally holding her beautiful month-old granddaughter, Josephine, in her last month. They were the lights of her life.
Margrit was the oldest of four siblings and shared her birthday (April 6) with her youngest sister. She was born in California, grew up in Connecticut and came to Ohio in her late teens. She was blessed with natural ability and talent, hiding her carefully crafted poems in a silver book. She craved independence and lived life on her terms, creating her own vision of what she wanted her life to be.
She worked at various companies, restaurants and family businesses—but they were always secondary to her role as a wife and mother. After successfully recovering from breast cancer two years ago, she wanted to pay back her good fortune and volunteered twice a week to help the children at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital.
She was 58 years old, her hair still naturally black, her face unlined, full of the freckles her mother was sure would fade when she was a teen. We will always cherish her infectious laugh, her creativity, her irreverent humor, her kind heart, her love of sports and the sport of politics. We always knew she would be there if we ever needed anything, big or small.
No words can express our feelings as this shining light of our lives has passed, too soon, into eternity.
Margrit was the daughter of Ruth Morhard (husband Albert) and the late Gerald Reid; sister of Gerald, Mary Reid (husband Raymond Rundelli) and Trish Reid; step-sister of Kathleen Miller (husband Steven), Albert Joseph Morhard (wife Kristina), Dr. Susan Posada (husband Miguel) and Jane Watson (husband David); daughter-in-law of Mary and the late Jack Roddy; sister-in-law of Catherine Mary Roddy (husband Glenn Pisani), Jack, Michael, Patricia, Brian (wife Monica), Kevin (wife Lisa) and the late Joseph Roddy; aunt, cousin and friend of many.
Per Margrit’s request, all services will be private, and her final resting place will be at Martha’s Vineyard. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Margrit may be made to the Hospice of the Western Reserve P.O. Box 72101, Cleveland, OH 44192 or Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital P.O.
