MARA DAINA FLYNN (nee Amolins) age 80, loving mother of Erika Apelis (husband Markus); devoted grandmother of Karlis, Lilija, and Peteris; cherished daughter of the late Alfreds and Anna (nee Bendiks) Amolins; dearest sister of Ildze Ekmanis (husband Juris, deceased) and Peteris Amolins; beloved sister-in-law of Anna Amolins; dear aunt of Marisa Gudrais, Lija Amolins, Lara Amolins, and Laila Gudrais; treasured cousin of Edite Gudrais (husband Peteris) and Egils Zalite; former wife of the late Richard P. Flynn.
Mara was born on September 5, 1944, in Riga, Latvia to Alfreds and Anna. She lived with her family in Germany for a part of her childhood before emigrating to Boston, Massachusetts, where she remained for over 60 years. Mara attended Girls Latin School in Boston and graduated from Roslindale High School in Boston as part of the Class of 1962. She continued her education at the Massachusetts College of Art, where she obtained her Bachelor of Art in 1966 and later received her Master’s Degree at Bridgewater State College. Mara had an artistic vision of the world and imparted this world onto others both by briefly working in fashion design and advertising before teaching art in the Dedham Public Schools for over 40 years. Mara was a talented watercolor artist depicting coastal scenes. She loved sharing her love of art with her grandchildren. When she wasn’t passing on her love of art to the next generation, Mara could often be found spending time with her beloved animal companions, painting with watercolors, and spending time with her grandchildren. She displayed her love for all animals by volunteering at a variety of animal shelters throughout her lifetime. Mara loved her family deeply. Spending time with them brought her the most joy, especially her daughter and precious grandkids. She was a thoughtful, giving, and selfless individual who always made everyone she met feel as if they were an important part of her world. Mara passed away peacefully on March 16, 2025, leaving behind a legacy as a truly inspirational woman to those around her.
Contributions may be made in Mara’s memory to Scituate Animal Shelter of Massachusetts, 780 Chief Justice Cushing Hwy, Scituate, MA 02066.
