JOSEPH JOHN MATEJKA, SR., aged 82 years, dearly beloved husband for 47 years to the late Sharon Ann (nee Salettel), dear father of Anne T. Dieglio (husband Tony), Joseph J., Jr. (wife Rory), Mark F. (wife Susan), James E. (wife Sydney) and Maureen A. Matejka, loving grandfather of Ana Kline (husband Wayne), Mary Catherine McHenry (husband Ryan), Caren Dieglio (fiancé Dominic Stokes), Calli Dieglio, and Halle, Molly, Benjamin, Jane, Cameron and Brandon Matejka, cherished brother of Robert (deceased) (wife Paula) and Mary Lou Brousil (husband Paul- deceased), devoted uncle and great-uncle, special friend to Nancy O’Toole. U.S. Army National Guard Veteran.
Joseph Matejka was born on September 1, 1938 in Cleveland, OH and passed away peacefully on April 11, 2021. He was a resident of Wickliffe for the past 55 years. He graduated from Benedictine High School in 1956, where he played clarinet in the marching band, and remained an active member of the Benedictine Alumni Association and Benedictine Boosters. After high school, Joe went on to receive his accounting degree from John Carroll University. He also worked for National Acme Sohio, Cleveland Cliffs, Bay Laboratories, Cleveland Clinic, and PNC Bank. Joe was a baseball coach for Wickliffe Boys Little League and a Chicken BBQ Volunteer at the Sisters of Notre Dame. The most enjoyment in Joe’s life came from eating Sherry’s cooking, drinking Pepsi, eating Biagio’s Donuts, Jerry’s Dari-Pride, Petti’s Pizza, and Pancake Breakfasts in Burton. He enjoyed car rides, his 3 mini schnauzers, visiting with neighbors, and attending high school and college football games. He was very passionate about Catholic Education, supporting Benedictine High School, Notre Dame Academy, St. Ignatius High School, and John Carroll University. He was also passionate about the Cleveland Indians, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Benedictine Football. Special events that Joe enjoyed during the year included Christmas, cutting down their Christmas trees, time spent visiting out of town family, and attending grandchildren’s activities. Joe is described by his family as hard working, loyal, honest, gentle spirited, charitable, faithful, friend and warm with a warm smile. He will be missed by many.

Mass of Christian Burial Thursday, April 15, 2021, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 29850 Euclid Ave., Wickliffe, at 10:30 AM. Burial following in All Souls Cemetery. Family will receive friends to pay tribute and celebrate the life of Joe at THE DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF SOUTH EUCLID, 4600 MAYFIELD RD. (just East of Green Rd.) WEDNESDAY 2-4 AND 6-8 PM.
