Joan L. Karnosh, a long-time resident of Shaker Heights, passed away December 12, 2019. She was 93. Joanie grew up on Parnell Road with her two sisters, Pat and Inky. They reveled in the neighborhood as children, climbing trees, exploring the local woods and fields before neighboring houses were built. She attended Shaker Schools and Laurel Upper School. She excelled in writing composition and poetry, accepting awards for her creativity. Upon graduation from Laurel, Joan attended Pine Manor College Junior College in Wellesley, MA, where she furthered her education as well as made life-long friends. She then returned to her home on Parnell Road and became the constant companion of her family. Her greatest love was her family — her mother, father, sisters, nieces and nephews. She was the family’s caretaker, from babysitting her nieces and nephews to taking care of her father, then her mother, in the last years of their lives. Joanie’s greatest passions were reading, riding her bicycle, and listening to the radio. Joan was an encyclopedia of information recalling years, dates, people, places and events in and around the Cleveland area. She loved to reminisce about local businesses that had disappeared from the landscape as well as the rapid transit downtown to shop at Halle’s and Higbee’s department stores. Joan will be missed by all because of her ability to coin a phrase in conversation as well as her warm, gentle mannerisms that are forever memorable.
