Jean A. Coon

JEAN ANN COON (nee Sray), aged 84 years, dearly beloved wife for nearly 57 years to Lloyd, dearest mother of Sharon Coon and Dennis Coon (wife Vicky), loving grandmother of Genevieve “Genny” and Jacqueline “Jackie”, cherished daughter of the late Joseph and Jean (nee Dolenc) Sray, devoted sister of the late Joseph R. Sraj,  and Mildred A. Sray, fond aunt of the late Joseph J. Sraj. Entered into eternal rest on March 3, 2021.

Private services were held, with a beautiful Mass of Resurrection at St. Anselm Catholic Church (Chesterland) followed by burial in All Souls Cemetery.

Jean Ann attended St. Vitus Elementary and graduated from St. Francis High School. Her faith and baptism were very important to her. She attended Dyke College and held a prestigious job as executive secretary at Warner & Swasey (now Gradall) to Vice President of the Company. She left her career when she was expecting her first child.

As a child, she attended Slovenian School, learning the language and customs. She was proud to be Slovenian and often recounted stories of her dad growing up in Yugoslavia, farming as a young man. Jean Ann was an excellent cook, integrating that Slovenian heritage in special meals like Julodis and Slovenian sausage. She spent countless hours baking special treats, like poticia and struedel. Of course, she enjoyed listening to polka music!

Jean Ann married the love of her life, Lloyd, three weeks after his Honorable Discharge form the U.S. Navy. They built a life in Chesterland for more than 30 years, before moving to West Farmington.

Jean Ann enjoyed making crafts, which she shared with family and friends. Most importantly, she enjoyed spending time with her family, including extended family and always looked forward to family reunions.

She was an advocate for her family, especially her children, whether they were in school, at a horse show or on the football field.

She supported her family’s multitude of agricultural interests, from raising bees and cattle to making maple syrup, harvesting crops and riding horses. Despite her city-upbringing, Jean Ann learned to braid ponies, feed cattle, make homemade ice cream and yogurt. She taxied her children to countless 4-H meetings, riding lessons, basketball, football and soccer practices and antique engine clubs and activities. The family enjoyed camping with their travel trailer.

During the past 10 years, her passion was caring for her grandchildren, the light of her life. First Genny, then Jackie, too. She helped care for them and assisted with their schooling. She supported their after-school activities and interests. She always made certain they had whatever they wanted, or she felt they needed. And she cherished every moment spent with them.
