Irene Weikart

IRENE R. WEIKART (nee Molner) age 97, beloved wife of the late Richard; loving mother of Sharon Szekely and Michael (wife Rosemary, deceased); devoted grandmother of Cory Colosimo, Jeffrey and Jason Crossman (wife Juana), Michelle and Robert Weikart, Rebecca and Ana Szekely and great-grandmother of Nick, Alexis, and Gavin; cherished daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (nee Rapasky) Molner; dearest sister of Christine Martin and the late John Repasky, George, Jack, Steve, Mike, and Joseph Molner, Jane Semon, Susan Granger, Catherine Day, and Ann Klett; dear aunt, great-aunt and friend of many.

Irene was born on April 3, 1921 and passed away on October 8, 2018. A resident of Wickliffe for 63 years, Irene previously grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania. In the 1940s and 50s, before she became a stay-at home-mom, Irene was a machinist at the Thompson company, where she excelled on the company baseball team. Irene was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, where she was active in the Women’s Guild and worked many hours helping at their pasta dinners, making Italian dressing, and running there bake sales.  Irene was also a member of American Legion Post 7 Ladies Auxiliary in Wickliffe, where she helped with poppy sales.  An avid traveler, Irene also loved fishing, going to the beach, birding, and enjoyed spending time in nature. She enjoyed cooking, crafting, and gardening, and grew plants from the seeds she collected on family trips to state parks. Irene was an avid bowler and kept her mind sharp with crossword puzzles. A fierce competitor at family game nights, Irene also enjoyed playing slot machines, and she had a knack for knowing all the “hot” machines.  Irene was voted Valentine’s Queen of Brookdale, her assisted living community. Irene loved people and loved to laugh, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Irene to American Legion Women’s Auxillary of Wickliffe, 29919 Euclid Avenue, Wickliffe, Ohio 44092 and Alliance Hospice, 2461 W. State Street, Alliance, Ohio 44601. Cremation by DeJohn Crematory. Relatives and friends are requested to meet for Mass of Christian Burial Friday, October 12, 2018 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church at 12 Noon, 1730 Mt. Carmel Dr., Wickliffe, Ohio 44092. Burial following at All Souls Cemetery. Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Irene at THE DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF WILLOUGHBY HILLS, 28890 CHARDON ROAD (between Bishop Rd. and Rt. 91) THURSDAY 4-8 PM.
