Herbert Pekarek

HERBERT CHARLES PEKAREK age 90, died at home August 31, 2017 with his loving wife of 65 years, Jean (nee Romaine) by his side. He leaves behind sons Lee (wife Bunny), Dale (wife Casey); grandchildren Marissa and Robert; brothers Roger (deceased) (wife Betty), Edward (wife Peggy). Also survived by nieces, nephews and many friends.

Herb was an outstanding athletic graduate of Shaw High School where he was a member of their 1944 baseball team that won the Ohio State Class A High School Baseball Championship. In football, he was the 1944 Cleveland News All Scholastic center and voted the most valuable player on the Shaw football squad. In addition, he was one of the outstanding members of Shaw’s Lake Erie League Championship basketball team.

He served two years in WWII in the U.S. Army Air Corps and then served another year as a lieutenant during the Korean War.

He played football for, and graduated with a BS. Degree from Northwestern University and obtained an advanced management degree from Carnegie-Mellon University.

He retired from TRW, Inc. as a Director of Manufacturing Engineering where he obtained a U.S. patent for manufacturing quality control procedures.

In February of 2017 he received his 65-year award as a member of Cleveland Lodge #781 as a member of the free and accepted Masons of Ohio.

He and his wife were avid golfers and were long time members of Acacia Country Club and after retiring spent winters in Naples, Florida as a member of Naples Heritage Golf & Country Club where Herb served on the Homeowners Board of Directors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, logging, woodworking winemaking and snowmobiling.

Celebration of Life Service Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 10 AM at THE FUNERAL HOME. Entombment following at Knollwood Cemetery. Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Herb at THE DeJOHN FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATIONS CENTER OF CHESTERLAND 12811 CHILLICOTHE ROAD (Rt. 306, just south of Mayfield Rd.)  TUESDAY 4-8 PM.
