Funeral services for Gordon W. Pedersen, 85, of Novelty, a retired United States Army Colonel and retired oral surgeon, will be held on Monday, Nov. 9, 2015 at 11 AM at Celebration Lutheran Church. Dr. Pedersen died Wednesday, Nov. 4 in Mentor.
He was born on September 7, 1930 in Omaha, Nebraska, and was a long-time resident of Novelty. He was a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and of Creighton University School of Dentistry. He was a veteran of the United States Army, commissioned officer in 1953 and retired with rank of Colonel in 1975. He received the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a retired professor from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine, serving from 1975 to 1992. There he had received the honor of Professor of the Year. He worked for over 20 years as an oral surgeon at Kaiser Permanente. He was noted for his literary contributions to the field of oral surgery in articles and textbooks.
He is survived by his children, Theodore K. (Koli), Karen (Ted) Meadows, Marcia, Jennifer (Brian) Franck and Emily (Michael) Iacchei, his grandchildren Katie (David) Teesdale, Maggie (Joel) Handwerk, Michael Young (fiancée Miranda Brooker), Elizabeth Franck, Ethan Franck, Evelyn and Julian Iacchei, his great-grandchildren, Avery and Carden, a sister Nancy (Dwayne) Armbrust, a sister-in-law Cleone Scharfeld, nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Cheryl (nee Shifler), his son Kurt, and his parents Theodore and Alice (nee Britton).
The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-6 PM at The DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Home, 4600 Mayfield Rd., South Euclid (just East of Green Rd.). Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery with military honors. Contributions in memory of Gordon are suggested to Disabled American Veterans, 1240 East 9th St., Cleveland, OH 44199; or to Celebration Lutheran Church, 10621 Auburn Rd., Chardon, OH 44024.
