Fred J. Nagel

FRED JOHN NAGEL age 90, beloved husband for 68 years of Helen  (nee McConlogue); loving father of Fred J. (wife Carol), Elaine M. Kubiak (fiancé Larry O’Dell), Pat A. Grace (husband Stephen), Leigh A. Nagel and Matthew T.; devoted grandfather of 8 and great-grandfather of 18; dearest brother of the late Margaret Docherty and Carl (wife Louise); dear uncle, great uncle and friend of many. U.S. Army Korean War Veteran.

Fred was born on March 1, 1930 and passed away peacefully on August 2, 2020. He was a resident of Mentor since 2014 and previously lived in Lyndhurst. Fred was a longtime parishioner and served as a eucharistic minister at St. Clare. He and his wife also attended St. Noel, St Paschal and most recently St. John Vianney Catholic churches. He started a prayer group, “Men of Praise.” Fred graduated from St. Ignatius High School in 1948 and Bowling Green State University in 1952 where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He was a 1st Lieutenant of the US Army during the Korean War where he earned a Bronze Star. Fred met the love of his life Helen on a hayride when they were 16 yrs. Old.  They married 6 years later and were blessed by God with five children. Fred was a hard worker and worked as a pension plan administrator for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. He will be remembered most as a very social and easy-going guy who was very devoted to his faith, family and their Christmas traditions. Family was everything to Fred! He loved his wife and children immensely and always made sure that they knew it.  Fred made it his mission that the family was well grounded in their faith in their early years. He was an inspiration and example for all his children to have a personal relationship with Christ. Fred prayed for his kids without ceasing saying “Lord, do for them what you did for me!” He always made time to sit down and talk about life. Fred truly cared about people.  He was an encourager to everyone. So many that have known him have stories about how he encouraged them and helped them to have hope and faith. Although Alzheimer’s impacted him in his later years of life, it could not touch his love and enjoyment of being with his family. His favorite saying over the last several years will resound forever in the hearts of his family: “Have I told you lately that I love you?” He has left his family with a legacy of love from which they will draw strength to go on together, through his many generations, to spread the love of God to the world! Fred will be forever missed.
