FR. EUGENE A. LaVERDIERE, S.S.S., a leading Catholic American Scripture scholar of the post-Vatican II era and the Senior Editor of Emmanuel Magazine, died Nov. 20, 2008 at the age of 72, at Pine Valley Care Center of Richfield, OH. following a prolonged illness. Fr. Eugene LaVerdiere, S.S.S., a member of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, was born on April 7, 1936 in Waterville, ME. Fr. LaVerdiere made his profession in the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament on Sept. 8, 1958. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 16, 1964 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland, ME. Fr. LaVerdiere taught at John Carroll University and lectured extensively in many Cleveland Diocesean Parishes. He is survived by his sister, Sr. Claudette LaVerdiere, M.M. (of Maryknoll, N.Y.), brothers Br. Gary LaVerdiere, S.S.S. (of Cleveland) and Peter (wife Cheryl) (of Oceanside, CA.) and three nephews, Jason, Charles and Kevin. His parents, Laurier and Gladys (nee Mathieu) LaVerdiere are deceased.
