Eugene Joseph Hertrick, age 93, beloved husband of 64 years to the late Margaret (nee Close). Loving father of Stephen (wife Judith) and Barbara. Grandfather of Hallie and Joseph Hertrick, step-grandfather of Caitlyn (husband Jordan) Gribble, Natalie and Abbey Siktberg. Step-great-grandfather of Aaliyah and Camden Gribble. Cherished son of the late Arthur and Alma (nee Zipfel); dearest brother of John (deceased), JoAnn (husband Walter, deceased) and Thomas (wife Patricia). Devoted uncle of Ann (husband Michael) Bordonaro, Michael (wife Lori) Ross, James (wife Alane) Ross, Timothy (wife Lori) Hertrick, Mary Lynn (husband George) Bush and Lauri (husband Jagger Breitenbach) Hertrick, great uncle of 17, and great-great uncle of 9. Dear cousin and friend of many.
Gene was born on January 29,1930, in Cleveland, Ohio and passed away on January 10, 2024, at his home in Harpersfield Township, Ohio. He previously resided in Mayfield Heights. He graduated from Benedictine High School in 1947. Gene proudly served as a corporal in the United States Marine Corps in the Korean War while stationed at Camp Lejeune. Gene retired from AT&T (Ohio Bell Telephone) as a Project Engineer after 35 years.
Gene was a devout Catholic. He volunteered for a variety of organizations throughout his life. He was an Usher at St Clare Church in Lyndhurst for 48 years. He was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers; Knights of Columbus Gilmour Council #310 Moses Cleveland 4th Degree; Marine Corps League; Loyal Order of the Moose. He was a founding member with his wife of the East Side Irish American Club and treasurer for 14 years of the Mayfield Heights Golden Age Club. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, swimming, traveling, ballroom dancing with his wife, Big Band music, going to wineries and craft breweries, Cardinal Lake and Camp Christopher and watching the wildlife at his home in the country.
The family would like to thank Adoration Hospice, Ashtabula, Ohio for taking excellent care of Gene for the last few months of his life. Gene’s charities of choice include Benedictine Order of Cleveland, 10510 Buckeye Rd, Cleveland, Ohio 44104 and Adoration Hospice, 2302 Metcalf Drive Unit 24, Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.
Mass of Christian Burial Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 12 noon at St. Andrew Abbey 2900 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Cleveland, Ohio 44104. Inurnment at Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors. Family will receive family and friends Friday, April 5, 2024, at The DeJohn Funeral Home and Celebrations Center, 12811 Chillicothe Rd, Chesterland, Ohio 44026 from 4-8 pm.
