ETHEL REDA PIKUS (nee Horvat) age 90, was called home on February 4, 2025. Ethel was born on October 7, 1934, in Sagamore, Pennsylvania, to the late Charles and Mary (Kovalchick) Horvat. Her parents were Slovak immigrants, and she was truly proud to be a coalminer's daughter. While attending Holy Name High School, Ethel met the love of her life, Raymond A. Pikus. In 1957, she married her high school sweetheart and eleven years later they settled in Munson, Ohio. Ray built their house, and Ethel made it a home. A home where they would raise three beautiful children, and she would live for 57 years. Ethel's strong will and energy kept her active throughout her entire life. Her employment included working as a bank teller, becoming a real estate agent, and finally serving as a switchboard operator for Geauga Hospital. After retiring, Ethel spent time volunteering at the library of her grandchildren's school, getting together with friends, and being active in her church. With friends, she golfed in multiple leagues, played cards and mahjong, participated in a pinochle club, and regularly met for lunch. Ethel was devoted to her faith and valued attending Mass, even when it was virtual. She was a member of Christ Child Society and humbly started the Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Helen after the loss of her daughter Christine. Ethel had a special talent for throwing a party and ensuring there was more than enough food, which always included multiple Slovak dishes. No matter how full or busy her days were, Ethel's focus and priority was being present in her children and grandchildren's lives. She was a passionate and vocal fan at their football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball games, and cheerleading performances. Conservative estimates have her attending over one thousand events. Ethel's presence and love will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond A.; daughter, Christine Blatnik; five brothers, Stephen, Charles, Fr. Andrew, Joseph, and George; and three sisters, Mary, Elizabeth, and Helen.
She is survived by her son, Raymond R. (Lenore) Pikus; daughter, Cynthia (Eric) Berschig; nine grandchildren, Vanni (Will) Skinner, Carl (Hayley) Blatnik, R.J. Pikus, Erin (Kent) Dinchman, Bryan Blatnik, Andrew (Gianni) Pikus, Nina Berschig, Dane Berschig, and Drake Berschig; great granddaughter, Nora Skinner; son in law Dennis Blatnik and many nieces and nephews.
