ELIZABETH B. MASTRANGELO, Ph.D., (nee Benedictt), aged 89 years, beloved wife of the late E.W. “Ev”, dearest mother of Mark (wife Ellen), Lisa, Susan Haffey and Ellen, cherished Nonna of Maria and Evan, devoted daughter of the late Angelo and Mary (nee Dalisio) Volio, cherished sister of the late John, Alfred and Jay Volio, treasured aunt and grand-aunt to many.
Dr. Mastrangelo died Monday at her residence. She was born on June 30, 1925 in Bellaire, Ohio. She resided in Willoughby since 1956, previously residing in East Cleveland and Salem, Ohio. She received her A.B. from Mt. Union College in 1947, her M.A. from Western Reserve University in 1953, and her Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve in 1970. Her teaching career began at Murray Hill Elementary School where she met her future husband. She served as a Supervisor and Director of the Center for Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading Problems for the Willoughby – Eastlake City Schools. She was a member and served on the Regents Committee on Developmental Education, the Graduate Alumni Council at C.W.R.U., Past President of the Ohio College Council of International Reading Association, the Developmental Education Council, Lake County Democratic Women’s Club, consultant for Head Start, the Ohio Education Association, the National Education Association and Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She received special recognition from Phi Beta Kappa of Cleveland, Pi Gamma Mu honorary, Phi Delta Gamma Honorary and Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary. She served on the Council-at-Large and as Chairwoman of the Education Commission at Immaculate Conception Parish, and was on the Personnel Committee at St. Ignatius High School. She was founding trustee at Lakeland Community College, where she worked for 23 years as Coordinator of the Child Development Program and Director of the Department of Tutorial Services.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 17, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 37932 Euclid Ave., Willoughby, at 10:00 AM. Interment following in Lake View Cemetery. The family will receive friends to pay tribute and celebrate the life of Elizabeth at THE DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF WILLOUGHBY HILLS, 28890 CHARDON RD. (between Bishop Rd. and Rt. 91) on THURSDAY from 3:00 to 5:00 AND 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
