Dr. Peter Tang

On January 21, 2023, Dr. Peter H.L. joined his wife Mei-Mei in the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was 88 years old and passed of natural causes in Charlotte, NC at his son David’s home. His other son Sam, daughter-in-law True, and granddaughter Mary True were with him.

Peter was born in Nanking, the former national capital of China, in 1934, where his father was an official in the central government. As the war with Japan broke out, the family took refuge inland China to avoid the ravage of war, and Peter spent his childhood in a peaceful and idyllic environment. At the end of the war, the family moved back to Guangzhou, near their ancestral hometown, until the Communist established the new China. The Tang family moved again to Hong Kong where Peter attended Pui Ching, a highly regarded Middle School associated with the Southern Baptist Church. While in school, Peter excelled academically and was popular among classmates for his participation in sports and drama. Upon graduation in 1952, Peter was admitted into the National Defense Medical School in Taipei, Taiwan, where he also received basic military training.

It was also in Taiwan where he was baptized and met his wife Mei-Mei, a fellow youth group and choir member. It was those years in Taipei when Peter matured as a devoted Christian and received voice training for his life-long passion in singing. After completing his medical training, he rejoined his family, which had already immigrated to California. Rather than staying close his family, Peter came to Cleveland for his internship so as to be close to Mei-Mei.

They were married in San Francisco in 1960 and gave birth to Sam in 1964 and David in 1966.

For over 50 years, Peter and Mei-Mei faithfully served Jesus Christ through Bible studies, worship services and music. Many, many people were saved through their ministry and became Peter and Mei Mei’s spiritual sons and daughters. Their Christian “descendants” are too many to count.

Peter was a gifted singer and praised God innumerable times in both the Cleveland Chinese Evangelical and Cedar Hill Baptist Churches. He even recorded a record of sacred duets that marked the height of his artistic powers.

Peter Tang was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mei-Mei. He is survived by his sons Sam and David, his daughter-in-law – True and his granddaughter – Mary True.

Peter’s life and ministry will be celebrated on Saturday, June 3 at 1:00 pm at Cedar Hill Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be made in Peter and/or Mei Mei’s name to either Cedar Hill Baptist or the Cleveland Chinese Evangelical Church.

After a short reception, family and friends will process to Lake View Cemetery, where he and Mei-Mei will be interred.

Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
