Donald J. "Sarge" Smith

DONALD J. “SARGE” SMITH, retired Detective and Police Officer of Mayfield Village, age 90, beloved husband of the late Rosemary “Rose” (nee Antal); loving father of Paul J.; cherished son of the late Carl P. and Josephine (nee Hammer); dearest brother-in-law of the late Margaret & George Sobey; dear uncle and cousin of many. U.S. Army Veteran. 

Sarge, as he was known to most, began his life in the Cleveland area on April 20, 1934 and graduated from West High School in 1952. Loyally, he answered the call from Uncle Sam to join the US Army. Returning home from the military, he married the love of his life, Rose, and their family grew to include a treasured son, Paul. To provide for them, he entered law enforcement and proudly served as an honest and fair police officer and detective for Mayfield Village for many years. Don also had the unique distinction and thrill of being a long-time bullpen catcher for the Cleveland Indians, catching fast balls from players such as Bob Feller. His sports interest also spanned to the Browns, Cavs and the excitement of boxing. Later in life, this social gentleman enjoyed traveling, especially on bus trips to try his luck at the casinos. Sarge was admired and respected by all who knew him. His soul left this world on February 12, 2025.

Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at St. Clare Catholic Church, 5659 Mayfield Road, Cleveland, OH at 10AM. Burial following at Holy Cross Cemetery. Family will receive friends to pay tribute to and celebrate the life of Don at THE DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF WILLOUGHBY HILLS, 28890 CHARDON ROAD (between Bishop Rd. and Rt. 91) MONDAY 4-8 PM.
