With heavy hearts, the family of Domenic Camino announces his passing. He will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Domenic was born in Petrella Tifernina, Italy on November 26, 1939 to Nicola and Concetta (DiLallo) Camino. He passed away at his home in Russell, Ohio on Saturday, June 22, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication to his family.
Domenic’s family and home that he built with his beloved wife Andrea were the cornerstones of his life; in which above all else, he took immense pride. He and his devoted wife Andrea were married for 61 years and dedicated their life to each other and their family. They found enormous pleasure in celebrating holidays and family events together, keeping alive Italian traditions while making new traditions of their own. To enhance the enjoyment of these celebrations, they even added a large room to their home to comfortably seat their large, growing family. He continued many other traditions, such as wine and sausage making, and his garden.
Domenic was sent to America by his parents February 5, 1955 on the Andrea Doria for a better life, he traveled with his older brother Paul. He settled in Collinwood, along with his brothers and one sister, while his sister Maria went to Argentina with her husband. Their parents made the greatest sacrifice for their children to come to America, while they had to stay behind. In 1965, Domenic, along with his five brothers, founded Camino Construction. Together, their hard work and determination turned a small venture into a successful business, leaving a lasting legacy in the industry that continues to this day. Their success also allowed them to purchase land in Hambden, always known as “the Farm”. This location became their “happy place” where the family regularly gathered on Sundays for family breakfasts, pasta, lamb, fishing and relaxing. Often joined by their piasanos, the Farm was a place for large celebrations and a haven to enjoy a simple day of playing cards and drinking homemade wine.
Domenic instilled family unity, hard work and the value of a dollar into his children and assured those lessons were passed on to his grandchildren. He was strict, yet a quiet and simple man with a generous heart of gold. Those he loved became family to him. He had a true green thumb and took enormous pride in his yard, his lake, and particularly his garden. A proud Italian, he and Andrea took their entire family to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in his hometown. While there, they renewed their wedding vows in his childhood church. Domenic loved to gamble by frequenting the casinos, playing cards and trying his luck with the lottery and scratch-off tickets. He took great joy in watching the Cleveland Browns, and even more so, the Cleveland Indians.
Domenic’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of his family – those who lovingly called him Dee, Dad, Papa, Uncle Domenic, Donkey or Papa Tadone. His legacy of love, hard work, family and traditions will continue to inspire us all. Rest in peace. You will be deeply missed.
