Dewie Rickard

DEWIE B. RICKARD (nee Buie) passed away peacefully September 11, 2017. Beloved mother of Ann P.R. Farkas (Tom) and Caroline S. Rickard, dearest grandmother of Samuel, Margaret, and William Farkas, preceded in death by her husband and best friend of 58 years, Richard D.S. Rickard, parents Sadie Phillips Buie and William G. Buie, sisters Peggy Kepley, Dixie Nuckols, Sadie Wilson, and Sue Safford Fisk.

Dewie was born July 12, 1928 in Sanford, NC, and grew up in Barium Springs, NC. Always a southern girl, Dewie was kind, gracious, witty, and loved a good laugh. After graduating from high school at the top of her class, Dewie attended Flora McDonald College (now St. Andrews University), graduating with a degree in elementary education. While teaching in Norfolk, VA, Dewie met a handsome Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy whom she married in 1955. Dick and Dewie moved to Cleveland, where Dick taught English at University School and Dewie taught 6th grade at Mercer Elementary School. When Carrie and Ann arrived, Dewie became a full time and fabulous mother. Once her girls were school age, Dewie began working in the library and bookstore at University School, where she worked for 25 years. Family, friends, travel, gardening, playing bridge and political debate were some of Dewie’s passions.

Services will be at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights on September 19, 2017 at 4 pm. Burial will be private at Lake View Cemetery. Donations in her name may be made to Children’s Hope Alliance, P.O. Box 1, Barium Springs, NC 28010. Many thanks to the staff at Arden Courts of Chagrin Falls and Heartland Hospice for their kind, compassionate care. Arrangements entrusted to THE DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF SOUTH EUCLID.
