Carol Schoenheit

Carol Straehley Schoenheit, born August 1, 1926, died January 7, 2018. Carol was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her family was avid horsemen, and Carol inherited that passion as a child and carried it into her elder years. Carol was a gifted rider and was able to calm both high-strung and formerly abused horses. She earned quite a collection of silver trophies in her riding competitions as a child and young adult. In that time her parents fell in love with and moved to Asheville NC in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Carol fell in love with that part of the country too, and considered that her true home for the rest of her life. Carol married in 1950, after graduating with a degree in Economics from University of Michigan, and eventually relocated with her husband to Syracuse, NY, where he began his medical practice and where she raised her 4 children. She loved playing outdoors, playing all kinds of board games and card games, and teaching her kids to love reading and learning new things. During those years she was also an avid Girl Scout Leader, as well as welcoming Mom to all of her kids’ friends. After a divorce, she return to her “true home,” and began her working career in accounting and tax. She was proud of her work, and proud of her diligence about it.

As her children grew and married, and had children of their own, her life became about visiting her now geographically very-spread-out children and grandchildren. She was a supportive mother of adult children gently offering wise advice, and was a devoted grandmother. She played with her grandchildren with as much relish as she ever had with her children, and even into her 70s was camping with them in their backyards. As she played games, it was important to her to give meaningful life lessons, so “letting anybody win” was not an option, one had to win “fair and square.”
In her declining years, Carol moved to Euclid, OH, to be near her daughter Sue, and spent the last 10 years of her life there.

Carol is survived by her four children and their families: son John, wife Jenivee, their son Samuel, daughter Sierra, her children Kaya and Eli, daughter Karly, her child Colton; son Tom, wife Jean, their sons Jeffrey and David, their daughters Lauren and Julie; daughter Sue, husband Dave, their son John and his wife Amanda and daughter Phoebe; and daughter Ruth, husband Richard, their daughter Caroline and son Louis.

Carol will be very much missed by her children and grandchildren, and now, great grandchildren. She lived a long and full life. A Memorial Service will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church, in Fletcher, NC on June 2, 2018, 10:00 am.

Cremation by DeJohn Crematory. Arrangements by THE DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF WILLOUGHBY HILLS.
