Barbara (Bullock) Schmidt, 87, of Mayfield Village, Ohio, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2021.
Always up for an adventure, Barb happily explored Vancouver, BC with 3 generations of family in 2017, enjoyed numerous bus trips with friends, and even dipped her toes in the beautiful waters off Fort Myers Beach this Easter. Church choir, delivering for Meals on Wheels, card games with her buddies, quilting and family dinners filled Barb’s later years. Prior to that, she and husband, Dick travelled extensively through the US, Hawaii and Canada, enjoyed Elderhostel programs (Barb for quilting, Dick for woodworking), volunteered at the MetroParks Nature Education Building, and spent lots of time with grandkids. Ever the keeper of matching Christmas PJs for the grandkids and pear bunnies for Easter, she will forever be remembered for belting out “Peace I ask of thee Oh River…” to instantly end any argument between siblings!
Barb’s long career as a pre-school teacher at Faith Pre-School was followed by over 10 years in her “retirement career” at the North Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks working with kids and seniors. Strong in her faith, Barb also served on the Board of the Little Light Learning Center at Willoughby Hills United Methodist Church and enjoyed working the Center’s annual ladies’ tea.
She was born to the late Margaret (Clark) Bullock and Raymond Bullock in 1933 in Bellows Falls, VT, went to Bellows Falls High School, and graduated from Lake Erie College. Barb studied abroad in 1953 at the Pestalozzi Children’s Village in Switzerland – a haven for 185 war-orphaned children from 9 countries – what a thrill!
Married to the late Richard (Dick) Schmidt in 1958, Barbara relocated to Mayfield Village and raised three wonderful children: Dan (deceased, wife Dian), Beth (Schmidt) Stickley and Sue (Schmidt) Thomson. She is survived by Beth and her husband Tim, and Sue (late husband John), grandchildren William Schmidt, Erin Thomson and Chelsea, Katelyn and Maggie Stickley, niece Linda Fousek, brother Fred Bullock and his wife Anni, and nieces and nephews Heidi, Ralf, Sylvia and Ella. She was preceeded in death by her brother George Bullock and his wife Mary.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Willoughby Hills United Methodist Church, or the Cleveland Metroparks North Chagrin Reservation.
Barb loved the outdoors and wanted a celebration of life to celebrate the beauty of the area. A Celebration of Life will take place on Barb’s birthday, July 15th, 2021 at the Intergrove Lodge, North Chagrin Reservation on Buttermilk Falls Parkway- north of main entrance (Sunset Lane) and south of Strawberry Picnic area at 2PM.
